Crossbreeding with beef breeds : young bulls heavier and with a better conformation

Since 2010, the development of beef production takes an important part among the livestock-related interventions within the Official Green Morocco Plan. Production and fattening of calves from terminal crossbreeding (beef breed sire x dairy breed female ou dame?) is one of the ways adopted to increase beef supply on the domestic market.

The National Association of Red Meat Producers (ANPVR) and other breeders associations mobilized successfully to deploy widely the use of animal insemination with beef breed sires for terminal crossbreeding. The French beef breeds (Charolais , Limousine, Blonde d’ Aquitaine, Gasconne and INRA95) hold a prominent place in this process.

Since 2012, the Institut de l’Elevage (French national Livestock Institute) provides technical assistance to ANPVR for analyzing the results of these terminal crosses and developing technical and economic references for fattening management.

The first performance results of terminal crosses measured in farms and slaughterhouses confirm an increase in meat production ranging from 40 to 70 kg (15 – 25%) per head compared with records of young bulls of dairy breed type.
